A shocking statement issued by Super League Greece announced the death of former Sheffield United player George Baldock.

Reports in Greece suggest that Baldock’s body was discovered in his home in the Athens suburb of Glyfada.

The 31-year-old defender had recently signed with Panathinaikos after spending the last seven years at Bramall Lane where he was “extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him”, as the Blades’ announcement on X read. 

Baldock last featured in Panathinaikos’ 0-0 draw with Olympiacos on Sunday.

The Super League in Greece extended condolences to the player’s family and loved ones, adding

The defender made his debut for the Greek side in August but was not included in the Greece squad for their upcoming match against England

The England national team shared their condolences on social media, stating:

We’re extremely saddened by the passing of George Baldock. George was close to many of our players and represented Greece – our opponents on Thursday night. We’re thinking of George’s family, friends, and teammates at club and country during this difficult time.

“Sheffield United Football Club Is Shocked” 

Sheffield United’s X statement also expressed their grief:

England international and ex-Sheffield United defender Harry Maguire also paid tribute by posting a heartbreak emoji and “RIP” next to a photo of Baldock on Instagram. 

Northampton Town, where Baldock had a loan spell in 2011, took it to X to express they were

Deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former loanee George Baldock at the tragically young age of 31.

The Cobblers also mentioned George’s five appearances with them in 2011 before playing for Oxford United and Sheffield United and extended its “sincerest condolences to George’s family and friends“.

MK Dons Debut, Over 200 Appearances for Sheffield

Born in England, Baldock began his professional career at Milton Keyes Dons, where he spent eight years. 

The club’s X statement reads:

Reading FC, Oxford United, and Brighton & Hove Albion also expressed their shock and expressed condolences for Baldock’s family.

After several loan spells at clubs like Tamworth, Oxford United, and Northampton, Baldock permanently transferred to Sheffield United in 2017. 

During his time with the Blades, George Baldock made over 200 appearances, including 83 Premier League outings, scoring two goals and recording six assists

Baldock was capped 12 times for the Greek national team and made four appearances for Panathinaikos this season across all competitions.
