Premier League teams have rewritten the record books this summer, spending more than £3 billion on transfers, comfortably outstripping the combined totals of Europe’s other top leagues. By the end of August, English clubs had already spent £2.73 billion, but a series of surprising last-minute deals pushed the final tally to £3.087 billion.
The standout headline came from Liverpool, who took the football world by storm by signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle for a British-record £125 million. That single deal set the tone for a window dominated by big-money moves.
Quiet Deadline Day
Deadline day was quieter than expected until the evening, with Isak’s transfer confirmed at 21:30 BST. however, not all proposed moves saw the light of day.
For example, Crystal Palace blocked captain Marc Guehi’s move as they couldn’t find a replacement for him. Newcastle moved quickly to cover Isak’s departure, landing Yoane Wissa from Brentford for £55 million.
Other notable transfers included Fulham breaking their club record to sign Brazilian winger Kevin from Shakhtar Donetsk for £34.6 million, while Manchester United brought in goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for £18.1 million.
Aston Villa secured Jadon Sancho and Harvey Elliott on season-long loans, Spurs added Randal Kolo Muani from PSG, and Arsenal bolstered their backline with Piero Hincapie. Newly promoted Sunderland spent heavily too, bringing in Ajax forwards Brian Brobbey and Bertrand Traore, as well as RB Leipzig defender Lutsharel Geertruida.
“A Humongous Flex” for Liverpool
Liverpool led the way in spending with a whopping total of £415 million, going over Chelsea’s £400 million record from 2023. Alongside Isak, the Reds signed Florian Wirtz for £116 million, Hugo Ekitike for £79 million, Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5 million, Giorgi Mamardashvili for £29 million, and Giovanni Leoni for £26 million.
Former City goalkeeper Joe Hart called it “a humongous flex by Liverpool”, also describing the transfer decisions and the spend money as “phenomenal”.
Other top clubs were particularly active, with Arsenal spending £255 million, Chelsea £285 million, and Manchester United investing £170.7m including £73.7 million to sign striker Benjamin Sesko from Leipzig. Promoted sides also opened their wallets, with Sunderland spending £162 million, while Burnley and Leeds each invested roughly £100 million to strengthen their chances of survival.
All in all, the summer confirmed that the Premier League remains far and away Europe’s biggest spender, setting a new standard for clubs across the continent.
