Incoming Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim’s Sporting staged an impressive comeback in the second half to defeat Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League, thanks to a hat-trick by Viktor Gyökeres and a goal from Maximiliano Araujo.

This marked City’s third consecutive loss, following defeats by Bournemouth and Tottenham.

Gyökeres’ Hat-Trick Perfect Sendoff For Boss

City initially dominated, with Phil Foden taking advantage of a Sporting mistake to score in the fifth minute.

Sporting responded just before halftime with Gyökeres finding the net, igniting a new energy in the team.

Moments into the second half, Araujo scored again for Sporting, followed by another goal from Gyökeres on a penalty, extending Sporting’s lead.

City struggled to contain Sporting’s attackers, including Pedro Goncalves and Trincao, who disrupted City’s defense throughout.

Erling Haaland missed a crucial penalty, which could have provided City with a much-needed boost.

Sporting secured their win with another penalty, sealing Viktor Gyökeres’ hat-trick and sending City fans home stunned.

Amorim’s win over Guardiola came just weeks before his upcoming debut with United in the Manchester derby on December 15,

Pep Guardiola: “It’s Difficult to Explain.”

It’s difficult to explain, We started really well, we had a very good first half. In football, you have to score goals. When you lose 4-1, you have to congratulate Sporting and learn from that.

City’s manager Pep Guardiola also gave “credit to Sporting”, arguing his side was not “clinical enough” in the first half.

The 53-year-old went on to say that his side “conceded a second goal” and has “to do better” and stop giving “easy balls away”.

Bernardo Silva also commented on City’s struggles, saying

It’s disappointing because we’re in a dark place right now. Everything looks to be going in the wrong way.

The Portuguese added that even when their play is good, they still fail to score their chances and “concede too easily”.

As a solution, Silva believes they “need to look inside” and check what it is that they are not doing well. “We need to get better quickly“, he added.

Amorim: “We Cannot Transport One Reality to Another.”

Amorim also reflected on his win in relation to his upcoming transfer, saying the result “doesn’t mean anything in particular”, adding “Manchester United cannot play the way we play, and we will have to adapt”.

We cannot transport one reality to another”, Man United’s future manager commented, describing the Premier League as “a different world” with different pressure.

It will be fun, very fun, and I’m ready for the challenge.

However, the 39-year-old referred to his latest victory as something that “was written” and “had to be like this”.

The celebrations lasted well into the night, with fans still singing across the city hours after the final whistle.

Amorim was frequently ushered to the front of the Sporting squad as they completed a well-earned lap of honor, receiving the admiration of fans who, despite earlier doubts, clearly still hold him in high regard.

Gyokeres said “It’s always nice to score and even better to score a hat-trick”, adding they expected the game to be “tough” which made them raise their level to match their “better opponents.”.

Sporting’s victory puts them second in their Champions League group, keeping them unbeaten, while Manchester City finds itself in sixth, facing growing pressure amid an uncharacteristic losing streak.
