Man Utd Head Coach, “Really Mad” About Draw With Liverpool

Ruben Amorim shows his frustration during Manchester United's draw with Liverpool in the Premier League 2024 season

Summary:

  • Ruben Amorim voiced his frustration after Manchester United’s 2-2 draw at Liverpool.
  • The head coach lamented the missed opportunity to secure all three points.
  • Captain Bruno Fernandes questioned why the team is unable to consistently deliver performances like the one at Anfield.

Ruben Amorim who is still working to implement his vision expressed his frustration after Manchester United’s 2-2 draw at Liverpool, saying he was “really mad” about leaving Anfield with just a point.

Similarly, captain Bruno Fernandes addressed the team’s inability to replicate such performances on a constant basis.

Amorim: “The Expectations Were So Much Different”

United took the lead early in the second half through Lisandro Martinez, but Liverpool responded with a Cody Gakpo equalizer and a Mohamed Salah penalty, which seemed to seal the win for the Premier league leaders.

However, Amad Diallo’s late strike salvaged a point for United. Despite the spirited effort, Amorim was visibly disappointed.

Yes, because the expectations were so much different than what we saw during the game

Amorim told Sky Sports when asked if the result was a step forward.

I think I get more mad because of the other games, so it’s even harder to understand some things

Fernandes: “We Can’t Be Happy With a Draw”

When Fernandes highlighted the team’s inconsistency, Amorim admitted his frustration extended beyond tactics or technique.

This is not about the system, it’s not about the technique. It’s about something else, and this is hard to understand, even for the coach

I think it was a point deserved, but it is just one point, and I think we should get mad and disappointed, more than the other day [in the defeats against] Newcastle, Bournemouth, Nottingham [Forest]—more than those days. Today we need to be really disappointed.

United’s boss also emphasized that the team’s competitive spirit against Liverpool needs to be replicated across all matches.

If we play against Liverpool every day, we will do that. So we have to do it against any opponent and to understand that we have to fight really bad to get out of this situation.

Despite his anger, Amorim praised the performance, saying,

I’m happy for the performance, not happy for the result, but I’m really mad because of the other games.

However, he held back from immediately addressing his players.

No, because I have to calm down and to say the right things. We are in a difficult moment, but it’s hard not to get really mad.

We have to move on. Congratulations to the lads for the performance, not for the result.

Fernandes shared similar mixed emotions, saying,

Even today we can’t be happy with a draw because we need points more than they did.

Reflecting on the team’s potential, he added,

If we show this today at Anfield against Liverpool… why can’t we do this every week?

Both Amorim and Fernandes made it clear that while the performance at Anfield showed promise, United’s inconsistency continued to be a pressing matter for the club.
